Who We Are

AWANA (Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed) is an international youth and children’s ministry that focuses on intentional discipleship of children and youth at each age level for them to understand and apply Scriptural truths in their lives. We aim to reach the next generation with the gospel of Jesus Christ, teach them values and character foundational truths from the scripture that they grow to be able and responsible leaders in their families, communities, and the larger society.

OUR HISTORY
How Awana Started

1941

As a pioneer in children’s ministry, Art Rorheim created new and innovative ways to reach kids with the gospel and lead them to know, love and serve Jesus Christ. In 1941, Art laid the foundation for the principles of Awana through a children’s program at North Side Gospel Center in Chicago.
1950
Other churches learned about the success of the program and inquired about its availability. In 1950, Latham and Rorheim founded Awana as a parachurch organization.
1960
By 1960, 900 churches had started Awana programs.
1972
By 1972, Awana began its first international club in Bolivia.
Today
Present in 8 of the 11 Southeast Asian nations, Awana has been helping churches and leaders to reach and teach children of the hope found in Christ. To date Awana Southeast Asia has trained leaders and partnered with churches and schools, raised more than 3,000 clubs, and reached more than 200,000 clubbers. Through discipleship materials for children ages two and above, resources and training for leaders, and weekly study of God’s word in Awana clubs, children, youths, and even parents are coming to the saving knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ
